CHILD WELFARE SPEAKER TRAVIS LLOYD ASSUMES SEAT ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS
— Continued Advocacy At National Level As Consultant & Board Member, Foster Care Alumni Of America
Travis Lloyd is a former foster youth turned inspirational speaker and advocate. It all started when a friend who was studying social work invited him to work with a group of foster youth. He gladly volunteered, but within three weeks was put on payroll as a regional facilitator for Elevate, now AMP (Achieving maximum Potential). He started performing songs about his own life growing up through struggles in the system, which led to performing at a national foster care conference held by Casey Family Programs in Atlanta, GA in 2007.
“When I started working with these kids, I realized that I was no different than them,” says Lloyd. “It helped me grow a lot emotionally. It even taught me more about myself when I got to help them overcome fears and find self-esteem, while dealing with more by the age of 15 than most people face their entire lives. It’s pretty awesome to be a part of a national movement.”
“I’m honored that they chose me to help such an awesome organization,” according to Lloyd, “and it is a great time to come on board. We are organizing a national fundraising campaign called Walking Today For A Better Tomorrow with the hash-tag #FosterWalk. I will be helping with the social media push and will be organizing a walk in my own city of Des Moines, IA. All of the walks are set to happen in May – foster care month.”
Dr. Chris Downs, president of The Downs Group, LLC and long-time Foster Care Of Alumni Of America Board member states, “Travis brings a wealth of wisdom, information, and a new ideas to the organization. We feel that he is a great asset and are excited to see what he brings to the table as we continue to expand our reach in providing a network for foster care alumni.”
Foster Care Alumni Of America provides the only nation-wide network for current and former foster youth. FosterCareAlumni.org states that there are approximately 12 million alumni of foster care in America. They strive to connect as many as possible to ignite change for a better tomorrow.
The #FosterWalk campaign is set to launch in 8 states, including two walks in Iowa; one at the state capitol in Des Moines and another at the old capitol in Iowa City. Walkers are encouraged to donate $25 for registration which includes a one year membership to FCAA, but there is no financial obligation. Foster care advocate and child welfare speaker Travis Lloyd will be hosting the event in Des Moines and encourages all to attend – “Walking today for a better tomorrow.”
