Suicide Awareness & Prevention at Hawkeye Community College
SUICIDE AWARENESS
Most people are unaware that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students aged 18-24. This is just one of the many statistics that don’t get talked about enough due to a lack of suicide awareness.
Even though I had a rough (very rough) time making it through college, I never put the pieces together on this touchy subject until I later worked as a mental health mobile crisis worker.
Sure, we would get called to bridges, ally ways, and homes to talk an older gentleman off the ledge or away from his gun after a divorce, but the first time I got called to a college campus to talk a teenage girl out of swallowing a bottle of pills was eye-opening.
And I ran into young men and women just like this girl time and time again. They all struggled with the same things I struggled with when I was younger. Probably you too for that matter.
- Self-identity
- Hopelessness
- Loneliness
- Overwhelmed
- Breakups
One thing I found common amongst all of the young people I had the privilege to meet, and hopefully impact for the better, was that the turning point for each of them was hopelessness.
This was always tied to vision and goals.
If they felt so overwhelmed that they could not see themselves having a future then they simply did not see any purpose in living. It may sound crazy to some, but in all reality it is VERY realistic.
We all need hope. We all need vision. We all need goals; something to look forward to. When we have this, it makes it easier to deal with disappointments, loss, and everything else that smacks us in the face as we walk through our lives.
That’s why I have created the #STOP1in12 Campaign. (click to learn more)
Through this campaign, I create videos and deliver speeches that educate on the basics of suicide awareness and prevention. But that is not the primary focus. The primary focus is educating on how to identify strengths, passions, and vision for your future. I call this Prevention.
This is the promo video for the very first #STOP1in12 speaking engagement in 2016:
Let’s empower one person at a time to know how to stand taller in the midst of crisis so they can be an example for the next person.
