The American Public Health Association reports that Suicide is the #1 cause of death among college students aged 18-24. Even alcohol related deaths are less than Suicide. (reference)
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that Suicide is also the 10th leading cause of death among ALL ages in America. (reference)
Campaign Goals:
- Increase support for those in need by empowering students, faculty, and staff with practical approaches for preventing suicide
- Increase awareness of the impact of suicide on college campuses
- Decrease stigma for suicide, depression, anxiety, and other traumatizing experiences
- Decrease suicide rates
Why We Care:
When college students struggle to balance studies, work, family responsibilities, and a social life it is tough to hold it together.
It’s tough to stay connected and feeling connected and supported is the primary need when someone is feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or having thoughts of harming themselves as a result of such overwhelming feelings.
As a result, 1 in 12 college students has physically written down a plan for committing suicide (SOURCE: National Data On Campus Suicide And Depression). This information was obtained from an anonymous study where the majority of participants stated they had not told anybody about their suicidal thoughts and plan.
We believe this is because most people are scared of the topic and we’re here to make it less scary.
Let’s Talk.
